Spring Happiness Ava Benson Ceramics Studio Workshop Class of 2024
I haven't taken ceramics since sophomore year so I was looking forward to getting started with clay again. I have always liked ceramics so doing Studio Workshop was something I was really excited for. For this spring art show I am creating five spring flower pots that are decorated with scored and slipped flowers and other designs. I wanted to create pots that make you feel excited since coming out of winter can cause mixed feelings. Mental health during the winter is a struggle for a lot of people and I wanted to create something that would make people happy and bring a warm spring feeling. I know for me mental health has been something that has not been easy, especially this year, and creating these pots gave me calming distraction from all that was going on in my life. I created this by throwing different cylinders and scoring and slipping designs on them. I am not taking ceramics next year but I have really enjoyed this experience and have learned a lot from this class and hope my pieces this year will bring joy to people's lives.

VMFA project
In this project I combined two peice of art that I found at the VMFA and made my own original work. I made a tea cup and a saucer with colorful dots for the glaze. I really enjoyed being able to combine two pieces of art from two different time periods into my own work.
Cereal Bowl
This was the very first project we did during this semester. I made a bowl for my favorite cereal, Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I was fun to score and slip and carve designs into my bowl and it was nice to get a feel for throwing again. I really enjoyed this project and thought it was a really creative warm-up.
